Homebirth & Birth Center Midwifery Care

Prenatal Care

Prenatal care is the cornerstone of a healthy birth. I address all aspects of your health including sleep quality, stress, nutrition, physical activity, emotional needs and more.

You do not need a referral to start care. I can order ultrasounds, lab tests or anything you need during a normal pregnancy. I am a preferred provided for most insurance companies and accept Medicaid and federal insurance.

Expect your appointments to last an unhurried full hour. You can contact me 24/7 with any urgent concerns. We will schedule additional visits if you have any extra needs.

Prenatal Visit Schedule:

  • Initial Consultation (free of charge)

  • Initial Prenatal (90 minutes)

  • Every 4 weeks up to 24 weeks

  • Every 2 weeks from 24-36 weeks

  • Every week from 36 weeks-birth

Labor and birth

My team will be on call for you 24 hours a day from 37 weeks until 42 weeks gestation. We offer continuous support starting in active labor. In early labor we will be in close contact, helping to optimize baby's position and mother's physical condition before the hard labor begins. The birth team, which consists of a midwife and 1-2 birth assistants, will stay in your home until both you and baby are stable, usually between 3-4 hours postpartum. You may choose to hire a doula if you think you need extra support.

If you desire a birth center delivery, I have admitting privileges to Haven Midwifery & Birth Center for your birth.  Additional fees may apply for use of the facility.

Postpartum visits

All visits are in-home so you can stay home and rest. I continue to be "on call" for you 24 hours after birth in case you have any urgent needs.  Postpartum care includes physical check ups, breastfeeding guidance, metabolic screening for baby, well baby care, postpartum depression screening, recovery plans and nutritional support.

Postpartum Visit Schedule:

  • 24 hours

  • Day 3

  • Day 7

  • 2 weeks

  • 6 weeks

  • Additional visits as needed for lactation support, pelvic floor therapy or any other needs.

  • If you are not in the Anchorage area, your postpartum schedule may be abbreviated and I will transfer care for some visits to a local provider.

Paying for your midwifery care:

  • I am a preferred provider for most private insurance. I can also accept federal insurance and Medicaid/Denali Kid Care.

  • I offer deep discounts for active duty military and for cash pre-payment.

  • Fees are qualified expenses through health savings accounts, (HSA) and medical cost sharing plans.

  • Payment plans & financing available.

When considering your options, remember this:  Your birth is as important as a wedding or other life changing event and deserves the same careful planning and investment.  A good birth can set you and your baby up for a lifetime of health benefits. Some people make the mistake of waiting until "next time" and end up regretting it. (It makes me really sad when people come to me after a not-so-great hospital birth and tell me they wish they would have had it at home instead.)  Your baby only gets one birth....this birth!
